What Is Well-being?
Well-being seems to be the word of the moment. With stress, anxiety and depression rising amongst children, young people and adults, we all need to implement some well-being into our daily life to maintain good physical, psychological and mental health.
There are many facets to maintaining good positive overall health which can often be overlooked by people. Practicing and implementing some good measures of self-care isn’t always easy. Life can get in the way, we may have stressful jobs or family life, or one of the more recent contributions is modern technology – being too consumed by it and not making enough time for ourselves. Sometimes guilt can also play a part in preventing us from taking some ‘me’ time and can be last on our agenda. Procrastinating and simply making excuses can also contribute to taking care of our self.
However, cultivating a regular self-care routine can make the world of difference in bringing the body back into balance. So, it makes sense to implement positive changes and lifestyle choices to promote an increased sense of well-being.  Not only helping short term but also in the long term, so it’s a win, win situation.
The benefits will encourage you to maintain this routine. We become more productive, calmer, relaxed, happier, which then has a knock-on effect on family members encouraging positive relationships.  Doing something we enjoy and love for ourselves can only bring positive outcomes in our daily life.
What Can I Include in My Self Care Routine?
Self-care is definitely a necessity and not a luxury!
Thankfully there are a numerous way in which we can engage in self-care.
This is not an exhaustive list, however, here are just a few to get you started.

  • Exercise

Yoga, walking, tennis, swimming, Pilates, the gym. If you only have 15 minutes to spare, this is better than nothing at all. Perhaps cutting down on watching TV or having a social media free day, to give you that extra time could also be an option – and far better for your health. Exercise helps to release the feel-good hormones serotonin, thus helping to boost mood.

  • Diet

Our diet can potentially have an impact on our general overall health. This may be the first port of call for many with regards to changing to more healthier lifestyle habits. Being mindful in what you’re eating, can have a positive impact in reducing illnesses, weight gain and chances of becoming a diabetic. Small changes are sometimes all that’s needed.

  • Say No!

Quite often we want to please others, not let them down or even just want to be liked by always saying yes.  We can also feel obligated to others, such as friends, colleagues and family members. Does this ring a bell? Always saying yes can deplete our own energy levels leaving us burnt out, stressed and even angry – all of which have a detrimental effect on your well-being! It can be hard to say no – but if it’s bringing you down and robbing you of your energy, then this is the time to say no. You will start to feel empowered and less likely to be consumed by negative energy.

  • Spend Time in Nature

One of the most wonderful and free ways to improve your well-being is spending time outside in nature. This is a great way to reduce blood pressure, release feel good hormones, reduce fatigue, tune in to the senses and improve sleep.
It can help you to reconnect with nature, being mindful and induce a greater sense of wellness.

  • Sound Asleep

A good night sleep is imperative for us to be able to function effectively and be productive on a daily basis.  Lack of sleep can cause health issues, which can then cause a downward spiral on our overall health. Stay clear of sugar and caffeine before bed, as these can often keep us awake. Sometimes we may take our troubles to bed with us, so writing these down before bed can remove those niggling and unwanted stresses from out mind. Something as simple as this can have a positive effect and promote a better night’s sleep.
Turning your phone off an hour before you go to bed is a great idea too. It helps to calm the mind as the blue light which emits from your phone can stimulate the brain and fools it into thinking it’s daytime, so keeping you awake.

  • Massage Therapy

One of the most common ways to improve a sense of wellness is a therapeutic massage! Whether it’s at a spa or at your local holistic therapist clinic, it’s always a welcomed element of self-indulgence.
Massage is an underestimated and can have a profound and positive effect on your health.
It can have the following benefits:

  1. Improve a sluggish lymphatic system and reduce fatigue.
  2. Relax and calm and racing mind
  3. Stimulate the release of the feel-good hormone serotonin
  4. Reduce aches and pains
  5. Reduce anxiety, stress and depression
  6. Improve skin tone
  7. Improve sleep
  8. Induce an increased sense of well-being
  9. Improves productivity
  10. Nurtures and stimulates emotional growth
  11. And many more!

The above are just a few simple ways to adopt a little self-care into your daily life. It can help you to reconnect spiritually, promote a good work/home/family balance and lead a fulfilling life.
